Durian Fertilizer Program – How to Achieve High Yield At Lower Cost

Achieve high durian yields with proper measures and INO Nature’s Fertilizer Program.

Overview

Durian farming in Malaysia offers a lucrative opportunity for farmers, with high potential for profitability. To maximize yields and quality, the selection of appropriate fertilizers is important. Establishing an ideal planting condition for durian cultivation is essential, along with optimized fertilizer programs for both immature and mature durian trees. Achieving successful multi-season durian harvests hinges on providing comprehensive nutrients and utilizing fertilizers that enhance plant immunity.

By prioritizing these strategic approaches, farmers can safeguard their investment and ensure that their efforts yield high-quality durian fruits. In this article, we will be showing you the approach, offering insights into sustainable durian farming practices to further enhance your understanding and success in durian cultivation.

Durian Farming —A Profitable Investment in Malaysia

Durian, known as the “King of Fruits” in Southeast Asia, has gained prominence in Malaysia’s agricultural landscape, as highlighted in the Malaysian National Agro-food Policy (2011-2020) by UPM

Particularly, the Musang King variant has emerged as a valuable commodity, becoming a new income source. With Musang King’s price surging to over RM100 per kg in July 2017, interest in durian farming has skyrocketed across Malaysia. Today, durian stands as the most popular crop in Malaysia and the tropical fruit farming of choice, covering approximately 41% of cultivated land, spanning around 70,000 hectares.

Beyond its agricultural appeal, durian farming presents a lucrative investment opportunity, with mature trees yielding fruit for decades, ensuring a sustained income stream.

Furthermore, the increasing international demand, especially in the China market, has led to premium durian prices, with top-quality fruits fetching high prices per ton. This trend has further increased the profitability of durian farming in Malaysia. Capitalizing on the country’s favorable climate for durian cultivation and the potential for abundant harvests, a growing number of farmers are venturing into durian plantations, fostering industry expansion in durian farming.

In this article, we will guide you on how to cultivate durian trees for successful fruiting, high yields and quality harvest of durians.

First, Let’s Understand the Growth Period of Durian Trees

There are various durian propagation techniques, with durian trees in Malaysia commonly propagated through bud grafts, cleft grafts, or approach grafts, initially cultivating rootstocks from seedlings in polybags.

Seed-grown trees start bearing fruit at 8-10 years, while grafted trees yield earlier, at 4-6 years. It’s common for individual trees to bear fruit twice a year, typically peaking in June and December, although some trees may exhibit biennial fruit-bearing patterns.

The durian fruit harvest cycle varies between trees. For a well-cultivated durian tree, initial yields range from 10 to 40 fruits in the first year, increasing to about 100 fruits by the sixth year and potentially reaching 200 fruits per tree by the 10th year of fruiting. With proper durian tree planting and maintenance techniques, high-yielding trees can produce 4 to 6 tonnes of durian fruits per acre annually within 10 to 15 years of planting.

Start with a Good Foundation for Durian Tree Cultivation

Firstly, start with a good durian cultivation foundation.

Land elevation for durian farming should be between 50 and 500 meters above sea level, avoiding slopes steeper than 30 degrees. Optimal soil pH is crucial for durian cultivation, so opt for well-draining sandy or clay loam soil with a pH of 5.5 to 6.5 that is rich in organic matter, and ensure it remains adequately moist but not waterlogged.

Durian trees thrive in a hot and humid tropical climate, with temperatures ideally ranging from 24-32°C and humidity levels between 75-80%. To promote flower initiation, incorporate a dry period of 1 to 2 months, and ensure annual rainfall exceeds 1500mm, supplemented with proper irrigation for consistent growth. Good drainage in durian farming is also important to prevent flooding and fungal diseases.

Young durian trees require careful attention to irrigation to prevent drought stress and encourage early fruiting. Implementing proper irrigation practices not only reduces mortality but also enhances vigor, enabling trees to bear fruits as early as 4-5 years. Furthermore, ensure a consistent water supply to prevent stunted growth and ensure optimal development. Regular monitoring of soil moisture levels is recommended to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot and other diseases.
